Spotlight Destination: Curaçao
This small Caribbean island is an LGBTQ+ haven without the crowds 🏝️

Welcome to Curaçao—a slice of Dutch-Caribbean charm with serious LGBTQ+ appeal.
Often overshadowed by more touristy neighbors, this sun-soaked island has quietly become one of the Caribbean's most queer-friendly escapes.
From the pastel-colored streets of Willemstad to hidden beaches and coral coves, Curaçao mixes European flair with laid-back island vibes.
And unlike much of the Caribbean, it's actually safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ travelers.
Curaçao 101

Just 40 miles north of Venezuela, Curaçao is the largest of the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao).
At 171 square miles (444 km²), Curaçao is about three times larger than Washington D.C., making it the perfect size for exploration—big enough to offer diverse experiences but small enough to easily navigate in a rental car.
This autonomous country remains part of Kingdom of the Netherlands, and boasts a rich multicultural heritage reflected in its four official languages: Dutch, English, Spanish, and the local Papiamento.
With consistently warm temperatures hovering around 80°F year-round and positioned outside the hurricane belt, the island offers reliable weather for visitors in any season.
Why Now? Historic Moment for LGBTQ+ Rights
The timing couldn't be better to visit Curaçao. The island made history last year when the Supreme Court of the Netherlands—of which the island is still a part—upheld a decision barring discrimination based on sexual orientation.
This landmark victory makes Curaçao one of the few Caribbean destinations where marriage equality is recognized.
Plus, the island is gearing up for its 13th annual Curaçao Pride celebration happening September 26 to October 5, 2025 with up to 3,000 people expected to attend the Pride Parade in Willemstad.
With events including beach parties, boat trips, and drag shows, it's the perfect time to plan your trip south.
The LGBTQ+ Scene
Curaçao has established itself as one of the most progressive islands in the Caribbean when it comes to LGBTQ+ inclusion.
The island has the highest membership rate of businesses in the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association in the Caribbean, meaning you'll find plenty of gay-friendly establishments.
For nightlife, head to GAZE Bar & Lounge, the island's dedicated LGBTQ+ venue. Open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, GAZE hosts sensational drag shows, themed parties, karaoke, and energetic dancing.
During Pride week, several other venues join in the festivities, including MidTown Curaçao in the Pietermaai district and Sweet Sin Brasserie, which hosts special gay nights.

How to Get There
Fly directly into Curaçao International Airport (CUR) from major U.S. hubs like Miami (3.5 hours), New York (4.5 hours), or Charlotte. Once on the island, renting a car is recommended as public transportation is limited, and taxis can be expensive. Most major rental companies have offices at the airport with rates starting around $40/day.
Weather & When to Go
Curaçao enjoys a warm, sunny climate year-round with temperatures rarely dropping below 78°F or exceeding 88°F. The coldest month is January at 79°F and the hottest month is September at 84°F. The island lies outside the hurricane belt, making it a reliable destination even during hurricane season.
While Pride in September is a highlight, winter and spring are popular times to visit to escape the cold. For better deals and fewer crowds, consider the shoulder seasons of April-May or October-November.
The Bottom Line
Curaçao offers that rare combination in the Caribbean: genuine LGBTQ+ acceptance with postcard-perfect beaches and vibrant culture.
With its landmark marriage equality ruling, growing Pride celebration, and "Live and Let Live" mentality, this colorful Dutch island is forging a path for inclusion in a region not always known for it.
Pack your swim briefs, sunscreen, and sense of adventure — Curaçao might just become your new favorite island getaway.
